I learn A LOT from being a teacher! It’s one of the areas in my life I feel like God has pointed out the most clear spiritual lessons. This story took place over 5 years ago, but the lesson has stuck with me. We had a book fair one year that must have been spy themed. The kids were super into using pencil lead like ink to take people’s fingerprints. One day, they were having everyone in the class put their print on a piece of paper. Then they covered the prints with tape to preserve them. Silly side note- they told me that now they had my fingerprint to compare in case I ever committed a crime. I assured them I had no plans of committing any crimes. They finished the day with everyone’s fingerprints. We all know that no two fingerprints are alike. This could easily be a story about how everyone is unique and special. That is very true and maybe be a story for another day. What I realized was that my fingerprints were literally all over the classroom. Where? On the pieces of tape I used to hang up all the posters.

That particular year, I had no walls that I was able to staple into. It wasn’t the best setup for an elementary school classroom. Everything I needed to put up had to be put up with heavy-duty tape. In the process of hanging up the posters, each piece of tape had multiple fingerprints on it. There would be no denying that I decorated the classroom. The evidence was everywhere!

That led me to remember that God’s fingerprints are EVERYWHERE in my life. There is no event in my life that God does not know about and has not played a part in. Were my fingerprints visible to people walking around the classroom? No. Are God’s fingerprints always visible to me when I look at my life? No. Are his fingerprints there? Absolutely! He’s touched all the events and circumstances that “decorate” my life, both the good and the bad. I didn’t see the actual fingerprints on the tape in my room because the posters were in front of them. The posters sticking to the walls were the evidence that the tape was working. Hopefully, my life has “decorations” or evidence that show that God is working. Hopefully, when people look around at my life, they can tell that God has been there. Hopefully, I’ll remember that though God’s fingerprints are not always visible to me, they are there because he is holding all things together in my life.

Psalm 8

1 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
